The Bear Grylls Adventure attraction at the NEC will close in December, a statement on the company's website has confirmed.

Described as a "difficult decision", the announcement comes due to "commercial challenges".

First opened six years ago, the centre featured 11 experiences included a 65ft-high rope course.

"This has been a very difficult decision and one that was made only after careful consideration," the statement said.

"Our priority now is looking after our team members and animals throughout this transition."

The 1,000 animals from the centre will be rehomed to other SEA LIFE centres, also run by Merlin Attractions.

"Over the coming weeks, we will continue to provide world-class animal care as we prepare to transfer our animals to suitable new homes, including to our nearby aquarium the National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham and other UK SEA LIFE sites," the statement continued.

"Our team of welfare specialists at SEA LIFE will oversee the transition process to ensure it runs as smoothly as possible."

The business said it is "proud of the positive impact" The Bear Grylls Adventure has had on "thousands of children and families" that have visited.

"We want to thank our amazing team and guests who have made this time so memorable," the statement continued.

The multi-million-pound centre opened for the first time in 2018 and sparked controversy after animal activists complained about plans for a 'dive experience' where customers can swim with sharks.

Merlin defended the decision at the time.

Tickets will remain valid until December 11, with guests booked to visit after that asked to request a refund.
