August update on Abbey Fields and Castle Farm projects
The latest update on Kenilworth's two new leisure centres has been released by the town council.
Presented at the last Kenilworth Town Council meeting, the report says a firm date for construction at Abbey Fields is yet to confirmed.
Put together by Warwick District Council, it says work on the new signs will still take a "few months".
"We are re-designing the foundations of the new building to avoid the remains as much as possible," it said.
"The recording and mapping of these remains has been a slow and painstaking process, and this has delayed work on this project.
"This work is continuing and so far we are not certain what the financial and time consequences for the project will be. We are working hard on these issues and we plan to have definitive answers to both questions within the next few months. At that time a report will come to Cabinet so it can be updated on the situation."
Demolition contractor Kier is close to finishing the removal of the 1980s foundations from amongst the medieval remains.
The next job will be to lay the 'cap' of inert material across the whole site before any construction can commence. It will not be possible to begin this work until the council has agreed with Historic England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport what the new foundation design will be.
The report added: "Therefore, there is likely to be a break from work on the site for a period of time.
"AR Demolition will remain on site to supervise the site, as it has been subject to various acts of vandalism."
The junior playground is set to open on weekdays during the holidays, as work on site slows.
Castle Farm
Work at Castle Farm also continues to progress with completion still on track for November 2023.
The upper floor concrete floor is now complete, as is the tarmac around the edge of the building.
The roof is also finished and work to get the power live is now also finished.
Glazing work is Ongoing and complete on east elevation.
Over the coming weeks tiling will progress as will work to install the lift shaft.
The six car parking spaces that were available to the public, have now been removed as work to this area progresses.
There will be no public parking at Castle Farm until the leisure centre opens.
