A major project to bring Kenilworth's Augustinian Abbey back to life through augmented reality which launched this year could be expanded.

The Kenilworth Revealed app was made public before Christmas, giving visitors the chance to walk through Abbey Fields and see what the monastery would have looked like in the 1500s.

Users can see the abbey brought back to life using their mobile phones, stopping at a number of plaques around the park to learn more about the town's history.

Following the success of the launch, Cllr Alan Chalmers - who championed the project in his time as mayor - has revealed early plans to expand the project further.

Speaking at the most recent Kenilworth Town Council meeting, he said: "Kenilworth Revealed is starting to gain traction - we have had over 1,000 downloads of the app.

"We are looking at expanding the concept to other historical events of Kenilworth and other parts of the town."

He continued: "Possibly we could look at 1927 which was when there was a hotbed of suffragette activity in the town.

"There were lots of activities happening for example at the Parochial Hall there was Suffragette action there. We thought it might be a nice idea.

"The Abbey itself was also excavated in 1922, and the ruins were uncovered."

Cllr Chalmers also said the idea of focusing on the 1840s when the railway arrived in Kenilworth had also been considered.

The Liberal Democrat councillor said funding would hopefully be secured from the National Lottery, and relevant groups in Kenilworth would be involved.

Fellow councillors questioned how the project would be managed by the council.

Cllr Kate Dickson said: "I am trying to understand how this meets with town council responsibilities.

"I know Kenilworth Revealed was the mayoral project, that was done in your name [Cllr Chalmers] and with the town council."

She continued: "I think if we were receiving a proposal we would need to know the amount of staffing time.

"Kenilworth Revealed took a huge amount of office staff time, they are not employed by taxpayers to do that, that is an extra thing. We need to be very clear at what is being expected of the town council.

"I am not convinced it is part of our strategy as a town council to support it in the same way as we did with Kenilworth Revealed.

"I think it is a great project for the town, people are talking about it everywhere, it has been fantastic the way it has rolled out, but I don't see a future, similar project would be a town council project."

Cllr Chalmers reiterated the project was in its very early stages and no decisions had been made yet.

More detailed plans are expected to be presented at the next council meeting in September.
