'We want people to know that we are a safe space' Kenilworth day centre reopens again
As the second national lockdown comes to an end, and the tiered restrictions come into place, now more than ever are we in need of community groups and facilities to help look after one another. Waverley Day Centre, on Waverley Road, is at the forefront of this in Kenilworth.
Operated by the charitable organisation Kenilworth Community Care, Waverley Day Centre has a long history of caring for elderly people in the town, and is now reopening its doors once more.
The centre is now open again Tuesday to Friday, and is dedicated to supporting "older people who live within CV8, helping them to maintain independence by providing a safe, caring and engaging daytime environment and giving support to their families and carers."
With their full time manager, Anne Cross, and dedicated team, the centre provides essential support to local elderly people, as well as vital respite for carers across the town.
CV8 residents can access the support of the centre. They will be collected from their homes in Waverley's mini-bus in the morning, arriving at the centre for activities, before they are given a two-course cooked lunch, courtesy of catering manager Sue.
More activities are then put on in the afternoon for clients to take part in. The mini-bus is then available to take clients home again. There is a charge for this service.
A lunch club is also available for those who wish to come just for food.
Following the lockdown period, the centre was able to reopen at the beginning of August, and has since then been providing essential support to elderly people in CV8.
Speaking to Nub News, centre manager Anne said "above all, we want people to know that we are a safe space, we are Covid-compliant, and here ready to welcome new customers.
"We are working hard to liaise with other groups and get the right support in place for our Kenilworth people."
Working with other groups is vital to the work at Waverley. Under normal circumstances function rooms at the centre are available to be rented out to local groups, and volunteers are encouraged to help in a variety of roles at the centre. More information on which can be found here.
Speaking at the Waverley AGM this year, chair David Lansdowne said "I want now to pay tribute to all those who currently support Waverley in different ways. We are very fortunate to have very dedicated paid staff admirably led by Anne Cross.
"Equally important are the many volunteers who give their time to making Waverley an important part of the Kenilworth community."
Above all though, the Waverley Day Centre remains open, and remains a vital service for the community in Kenilworth.
