Possible plans to turn parts of Kenilworth into 20mph limits could cost up to £260,000 according to a local councillor.

Warwickshire County Council had committed in July to investigate the cost of dropping speed limits to 20mph in all urban areas.

But research indicates it could cost almost twice as much to put 20mph speed limits only on certain roads, rather than across the board.

Speaking at last week's Kenilworth Town Council meeting town and county Councillor Rik Spencer said the town had been used as a model to investigate the issue.

The findings of the research will be used to make recommendations for the rest of the county.

He said: "We looked into making the whole of Kenilworth 20mph and what the cost implication was and it came out at about £160,000.

"The second option we looked at was changing the speed only in appropriate areas - which seems to be more sensible.

"But to do it that way you could add another £100,000 because there is a lot more legal work, a lot more signs and a lot more repeater signs needed."

The cross-party working group, which Cllr Spencer sits on, will make a recommendation for WCC's cabinet in January.

If cabinet approve plans for new 20mph speed limits they would then be voted on by the full council.

At July's full county council meeting Cllr Jonathon Chilvers had claimed that it would cost the county council around £2.2 million to drop speed limits across the board.

But speaking to Nub News Cllr Spencer added: "The main focus of the working group was what is the cost, because that it what it is really about.

"Those bills were just for Kenilworth, so think about that for a county-wide change."
