£13.5k budget set for Kenilworth's Commonwealth Games decorations
Up to £13,500 will be spent decorating Kenilworth in time for the Commonwealth Games this summer.
Kenilworth Town Council will provide £5,000 of the budget, with the rest coming from Warwick District Council.
Decorations are set to be put on Warwick Road and High Street, but will not be up in time for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee as the council had hoped.
And councillors have raised concerns that the £13,500 may be excessive.
"I am mindful that people will have just heard how much their gas and electricity bills will be going up, and now they are seeing this council spend £5,000 of their money," said Cllr Richard Dickson at this month's finance and general services committee meeting.
"I do very much hope that we can justify this expenditure of tax payer's money on putting up some banners on Warwick Road."
However, other councillors said it was important that Kenilworth marked the international event.
"I think it is really important that we have a presence for the Commonwealth Games," said Cllr Rob Barry.
"Obviously the University of Warwick is going to be an athletes' village, but when the athletes are not competing they might get bored and come into the town."
Having agreed the budget, KTC will now discuss designs with the district council.
Abbey End will still be decorated from the Queen's Jubilee, so Commonwealth banners are set to be placed along the rest of Warwick Road.
"The Commonwealth Games says what decorations you are allowed to have and what you are allowed to produce," added Cllr Michael Coker.
"Its all within their brand.
"Of course there is bound to be more in Leamington and Warwick as the games are actually happening there and we are a subsidiary."
