Heatwave tips for hearing aids from Kenilworth expert
By James Smith 23rd Jun 2026
With temperatures expected to exceed 38C in some parts of the UK this week, hearing loss charity RNID and a Kenilworth audiologist are urging hearing aid users to take extra care of their devices during the hot weather.
Around three million people in the UK use hearing aids, but high temperatures, sweat, humidity and direct sunlight can all affect how well they work.
To help people stay connected and enjoy the sunshine without missing out on conversations, local audiologist Khiyam Hussnain has also shared top tips for keeping hearing aids in good condition during a heatwave.
Khiyam, Director and Audiologist at Hear Better with Us, commented: "During periods of hot weather, hearing aid users may notice their devices are affected by increased moisture, sweat and humidity.
"However, simple care and good daily habits can help prevent many avoidable problems and keep hearing aids working at their best throughout the summer months."
The charity advises users to avoid leaving hearing aids in direct sunlight, such as on a windowsill, as excessive heat can damage the devices.
If hearing aids become wet, a drying kit can be used to remove moisture, with devices safely left in the kit overnight when not in use.
Khiyam added: "Many people don't realise that moisture is one of the biggest challenges for hearing aids during warmer weather.
"Taking a few simple steps — such as wiping hearing aids regularly with a clean, dry cloth, avoiding leaving them in direct sunlight, and using a drying system overnight if needed - can make a real difference to their performance and reliability."

RNID also recommends using hearing aid protection sleeves or sweat-wicking headbands to reduce moisture exposure.
Users should wait for sun cream or sprays to fully dry before inserting hearing aids, as oils from these products can clog microphones and affect performance.
Finally, hearing aids should be cleaned regularly during hot weather.
Sweat can cause a build-up of oils and salt, so users are encouraged to wipe their devices with a clean, dry cloth whenever they remove them.
"Modern hearing aids are designed to cope with everyday life, including changes in temperature, but like any electronic device they benefit from regular care and maintenance," explained Khiyam.
"If someone notices reduced sound quality, intermittent performance or their hearing aid doesn't seem to be working as well as usual, it's always best to seek professional advice rather than waiting for the issue to worsen.
"Looking after hearing aids is about more than protecting a device - it helps people stay connected with conversations, family and friends. A few simple maintenance habits can help users continue to get the full benefit from their hearing aids throughout the summer and beyond."
