One year of a local women’s book club building community in Kenilworth
By James Smith 3rd Feb 2026
One year ago, Elena Russell's small idea turned into a meaningful part of the local community.
What began as a simple book club has grown into a welcoming space where women can meet, talk and build genuine friendships.
Elena moved back to the area after eight years of living away and was looking to make new friends and feel just a little bit less lonely in her 30s.
The book club - now hosted at Vynes of Kenilworth - was started with one clear goal: to help women in the area connect with others in a relaxed and friendly setting.
She said many women want to make new friends but find it difficult as routines change, people move, or work and family commitments take priority.
"The book club offered an easy way to show up, knowing there would already be a shared topic and a warm welcome," she said.
"From the beginning, the focus was never just on reading.
"Books are the starting point, but the real value comes from conversation.
"Meetings often include discussions about life, work, creativity, and personal experiences, with books acting as a bridge rather than a barrier."
Members range across different ages and backgrounds, and come together each month to laugh and make memories.
Sometimes the book club has even been referred to as 'cheese and wine club ft books!'

"Over the past year, the club has become more than a monthly meet-up," Elena added.
"Friendships have formed outside the group, members have supported one another through personal milestones, and many have shared how much the club has helped them feel less isolated.
"For some, it is the one regular social commitment they make time for. For others, it has been the confidence boost needed to engage more with the wider community.
"The success of the book club shows how small, low-pressure initiatives can make a real difference.
"Creating spaces that are informal, welcoming, and consistent allows relationships to develop naturally. There is no expectation to be an expert reader or to speak perfectly. Showing up is enough."
As the book club moves into its second year, the hope is to continue growing while keeping the same "sense of openness and connection" that defined the first.
In a world that often feels busy and disconnected, Elena says this group is a reminder that community can start with something as simple as a shared book and a conversation.
