Prospective new politicians have already been making statements following Rishi Sunak's announcement of a July general election yesterday (May 22).

The prime minister confirmed locals will head to the polls on Thursday 4 July, and said: "Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future."

Meanwhile in Kenilworth and Southam, local Liberal Democrat candidate Jenny Wilkinson said it is "time for change".

"I've been out across the constituency speaking to thousands of people and the sentiment is clear. People are fed up with this government and want change," she said.

"They want more support for our NHS, with shorter waiting lists for treatment and the ability to see a GP when they need to.

"They want a stronger economy that benefits everyone in the UK, through wise investment, fair taxes and responsible management of the public finances. And, they want someone to stand up to the companies polluting our rivers whilst reaping in millions."

In the 2019 election the Liberal Democrats came second in Kenilworth and Southam, as Sir Jeremy Wright kept the seat for the Conservatives.

Ms Wilkinson said in 2024 it is a clear choice locally for "more of the same" with the Tories or "a new, fair deal with the Liberal Democrats".

Nub News understands Alix Dearing is to represent the Green Party at the upcoming election after their previous candidate Zoe Leventhal had to step down.

Meanwhile Sir Jeremy, who was first elected to parliament in 2005, is yet to make a comment following yesterday's announcement.

He has already been selected as the Tories candidate for 2024.

Nub News understands the Labour group is also yet to chose a candidate for July 4.

Meanwhile Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the announcement.

Chief exec Corin Crane said: "There were lots of rumours that an election was going to be called, which has been going on for several months.

"Businesses across the region will welcome an end to this uncertainty in the hope that, whatever the outcome on July 4, it brings stability and, indeed, a strategy for economic growth."

He added: "As an apolitical organisation, we are dedicated to supporting our members through these times of change and ensuring they have the stability required to thrive.

"I would like to pay tribute to all of the MPs who have served our city and our county during this Parliament – some of whom are standing down at this election.

"And, as the voice of business, we will work with our newly elected MPs after July 4 to ensure that the needs of companies of all sizes and sectors across our region are understood at a local, regional and national level."
