The local Green Party is once again on the hunt for a local candidate for the upcoming general election after its previous representative dropped out of the race for "family reasons".

Town councillor Zoe Leventhal has confirmed she will no longer run to become MP for Kenilworth and Southam, but will stay on at Kenilworth Town Council.

“I'd like to thank all the amazing volunteers and supporters who have been part of the campaign so far," she said in a statement.

"I have really enjoyed getting to know communities and groups across the villages and towns in the constituency, and building really positive connections.

"It has been such a difficult decision to have to step down, but it is the right one for me and my family at this time.

"I am looking forward to continuing my work on Kenilworth Town Council, supporting residents in Abbey Ward, and focussing on several important local projects.

"I wish my Green Party colleagues every success in the continuation of the party's General Election campaign.”

Cllr Leventhal was announced as the Green's local candidate in November, promising to "make history" in the constituency.

The barrister of 20 years experience was first elected to the town council last year as the Greens took control of the body and was bidding to become the first Green MP in the constituency.

The local Green group is expected to announce a new candidate in the coming weeks.

“I'm very sorry Zoe has had to step down as General Election candidate," fellow Green member Cllr James Kennedy said.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for everything she has achieved over the past six months since her campaign started.

"She's encouraged so many people across the constituency to consider voting Green for the first time and created a strong momentum for positive change which will continue with our new candidate.

"The Green Party messages of a fairer greener future, stronger communities and doing politics better have never been more needed and so well received in Kenilworth and Southam.”
