The Kenilworth men running to Support Our Paras
Remembrance Sunday next weekend will see three Kenilworth men complete the 'Paras' 10' event in aid of Support Our Paras.
Glen Iceton, Paul Edwards, and Bob Stear will all be running 10 miles, but with the adage that they must be wearing boots and carrying a 35lb pack the whole way. This is to replicate military fitness and selection tests.
The Paras' 10 is organised every year by the charity Support Our Paras which "supports The Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces through the welfare of veterans, serving soldiers and their families, and through the maintenance of its regimental efficiency, ethos, spirit and heritage."
The Kenilworth group will run from Glen's house, to the war memorial in Abbey Fields where they will lay a cross.
They will then run to the Royal Fusiliers museum at St John's House in Warwick, in time for a two-minute silence at 11am.
The three will then return back to the war memorial to complete the ten mile round trip.
This is the first time that any of them have entered this event, although Glen has run the London Marathon twice before.
Normally the Paras' Ten is held at Colchester and Catterick, but for obvious reasons has had to go virtual for the first time. This means that participants up and down the country can choose their own route, record their times on Strava any day this week and then send them off to the organisers.
Speaking to Nub News, Glen said "it was a really good opportunity as this is an event that I have wanted to do for a while now.
"I wanted to do it because I was in the military, and I had a strong connection with the paras.
"The driver for it was that we mark Remembrance Sunday.
"With everything going on, it is easy for us to forget Remembrance Sunday, and the people who have died for our freedoms, which is maybe ironic at the moment, given that we're being curtailed so much, but maybe this will help people realise that if it wasn't for those sacrifices, this could have been the norm."
Glen served in the Blues and Royals, but he is not the only military connection for the team. The team was supposed to be joined by a fourth runner, Joe Milner, who has sadly had to drop out this week.
"One of the lads, Joe, his grandfather had been in the paras, and served in Palestine in 1948-9, so he had a personal connection as well."
The men are all long-standing friends after playing football together with the dads' team at Priors Field School where all their children attended.
They have been training hard for Sunday, but it is not as straightforward as you would expect.
"It's the pack that is the main element, you've got to make sure the weight is in there properly, and you are used to actually moving with it.
"The furthest I have done so far is 8km."
Normally, the event in itself is the fundraiser for Support Our Paras, as participants pay to enter. However, Glen and the rest of his team have taken it upon themselves to also raise funds through sponsorship.
"So I started up wanting to raise £150," says Glen who at the time of writing has received over £200 in donations "but if we could get a bit more then that would be great.
"The charity has been very good; they have contacted us to say thank you for the sponsorship.
"So I am really pleased that we have raised that amount of money, we didn't set out to, but it has been a great by-product."

We will update you next week with how they got on.
