Councillors criticise lack of communication over plans to build Covid-19 memorial statue in Kenilworth
Plans to build a Covid-19 memorial sculpture in the centre of Kenilworth have been agreed without the knowledge of local councillors or community groups.
Warwick District Council revealed the plans after the town council enquired about the possibility of creating a wild meadow outside Jubilee House.
The sculpture, which will also have a wisteria and an information board next to it, will be erected in the empty flower bed outside Kenilworth Town Council's headquarters.
Town councillors said, whilst they liked the idea, it would have been nice to be told in advance.
"This is the first I have heard about this. It is unfortunate that they did not inform the town council as it is very much on our front doorstep," said Cllr James Kennedy at last month's town council meeting.
"It is an excellent idea but it would have been nice to know about it beforehand. So obviously we need to find out more about what it would look like."
Cllr Richard Dickson, a trustee of Compassionate Kenilworth, added: "I am delighted to hear that the district council is proposing to build a Covid memorial.
"It is completely news to the Covid-19 Support Group in Kenilworth."
Town councillors were also told that the wild meadow would be further complicated by the fact that WDC does not own all the land outside Jubilee House.
However, members decided to form a new task and finish group to begin work on the meadow and to form a plan with the district council.
