13,000 speeding offences went unpunished in Warwickshire last year

By James Smith 11th Feb 2022

Two out of five speeding offences in Warwickshire last year went unpunished, new data has shown.

Of the 34,132 speeding offences in the county, 13,239 (39 per cent) were cancelled - the highest proportion of anywhere in the country.

The number of cancelled offences in the 12 months up to March 2021 shot up by nearly 3,000 compared to the year before.

Whilst the total number of offences recorded last year was 11,000 fewer than in 2019-20.

The RAC Foundation found that one in six offences nationwide were thrown out by police forces last year.

Faulty speed cameras, false number plates, delays in issuing notices and a lack of resources have all been blamed for the 400,000 cancelled speeding offences nationwide.

Emergency vehicles lawfully breaking the speed limit whilst using blue lights also made up for some of the cases.

Of the 21,000 Warwickshire offences that were actually dealt with last year, 24 per cent received fixed penalties, one third were sent on speed awareness courses and four per cent were taken to court.

Nationwide, 977,587 motorists were sent on speed awareness courses last year.
