Kenilworth Rugby Football Club (KRFC) is "proudly" marking its centenary season, celebrating a "remarkable" 100 years of sporting heritage and community involvement.
Founded in 1924, the club played its inaugural match against Warwickshire Yeomanry at the Memorial Park Coventry, on Saturday 20 September 1924, a hard-fought contest that ended in a narrow 3-0 loss.
A century later, KRFC continues to "thrive as a cornerstone of Kenilworth's community", reflecting on a storied past and looking ahead to an exciting future for the club in the town.
To commemorate the start of the centenary season, on Saturday, 21 September 2024, club members will walk from the Memorial Park to the club's current ground on Glasshouse Lane, Kenilworth where the team has played since moving from Warwick Road in 1947.
KRFC will then host a special celebration lunch, before their Men's Midlands 1 match against Bromsgrove. Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm.
Over the past century, more than 1,000 players have represented KRFC in over 3,000 first team matches, with notable achievements including the 2019 Intermediate Cup victory at Twickenham in a thrilling final against Matson from Gloucestershire.
Today, the club is home to a thriving mixed minis and juniors section, with over 400 players aged from under six to under 18 years.
In the senior game, Kenilworth Women compete at Championship level, while the men's side plays in Regional 1, Midlands. The men's 1st XV will kick off their 2024 season away to Silhillians on Saturday, 7 September, and the Women's 1st XV will play their first game at home against Buckingham Swans on Sunday, 15 September.
Club president Rich Bennett expressed his pride in the club's legacy, stating: "We are an inclusive community rugby club that enables all players to either just play or become the best version of themselves and to progress as far as they wish.
"It is humbling and inspirational to know that we have many players who have gone on to representative rugby and elite rugby.
"May this continue for another century!"
As KRFC celebrates its centenary, it says it remains committed to fostering a love for rugby, supporting player development, and continuing its proud tradition of community engagement through the values of the game of rugby.
