Local gin producer That Gin Company recently began selling its huge selection of branded gins online, and we were sent a bottle of its jalapeño variety to try for ourselves.

The Warwick-based producer, which has a bar in Swan Street, has become well known for its own range of bespoke, bold gin flavours, all handcrafted on site.

Customers can sample everything from orange and cherry bakewell, all the way to black pepper and cardamom, black forest gateau and biscoffi.

I have tried a number of their flavours, both in Warwick and at home, and am yet to be disappointed.

And while I was wary at first of trying the jalapeño - despite enjoying the odd spiced gin - I am definitely glad I did.

For my first try I started with a healthy measure over ice with a generous helping of tonic, thinking I would ease myself in.

It was definitely a promising start with the bold jalapeño flavour still coming through, and leaving a slight tingling feeling on the tongue, like you were eating something mildly spicy.

This first drink went down very quickly, so I had another, this time with half as much tonic.

As expected, this allowed the jalapeño flavour to dominate, with a more intense feeling on the tongue. But it was by no means overpowering.

Again the drink did not last long!

And then I gave it a go completely neat. While I will not be making this a regular 'quite evening' tipple, it was actually very pleasant - and not the full mouthful of overpowering spice I was expecting!

As with many of the other offerings from That Gin Company, I liked the flexibility the jalapeño flavour offered, easily being a long or short drink.

And while I have not tried it myself, I could easily see the flavour being the base of a spiced gin punch or a spicy gin gimlet!

The jalapeno gin could easily be drunk neat, with lemonde or tonic or as a cocktail (image supplied)

The gin was packaged in a simple but elegant cork-stopped bottle with hand-written label which shows the amount of care put into each product.

If you're looking for something different to add to your drinks cabinet - or perhaps a Father's Day gift - the jalapeno flavour is definitely an excellent choice.

While we were given a 500ml bottle, it is also available as a 50ml - so why not give it a go!

We were also sent one of the bar's unique metal filter straws to try.

As sad as it may sound, I was particularly excited to be sent one of these having used them on several trips to the Swan Street venue.

Originally sourced by business owner Steve Bazell as an eco-alternative to paper straws, they are an excellent idea.

Too often when you are having cocktails, the drinking experience is ruined by your straw being blocked with crushed ice or bits of fruit and garnish.

But with the filtered straws there is no risk of a mouthful of bits, or you being forced to pick fruit seeds out the bottom of the straw just to enjoy your drink.

Actually used for drinking loose leaf tea, Steve said the straws epitomised the ethos of his company - "quality and thought" being put into every drink.

We definitely agree! It is a simple but incredibly effective solution to the problem!
