Work is set to start on the new Wetherspoon pub in the centre of Kenilworth next week, nearly three years after the plans were first revealed.

An opening date and name for the new boozer are yet to be confirmed though, with the pub giants to start work on site on Monday 17 February.

Wetherspoon first confirmed it was coming to Kenilworth in July 2022, announcing it would take over the former Poundland unit at The Square.

And with speculation on social media that the plans were no longer going ahead, the chain today (February 10) confirmed the next steps.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said to Nub News: "The company is to start development work on its new pub in Kenilworth on Monday (February 17).

"We are looking forward to opening the pub, though there is no opening date as yet.

"Wetherspoon believes the pub will be a great asset to the town and be welcomed by people in Kenilworth."

A planning application was first approved for the development in March 2023, after some back and forth over the designs.

Multiple licence applications have since been put forward, as Wetherspoon continued to make small changes to the plans.

The arrival of Wetherspoon to Kenilworth has brought a mixed reaction from locals.

The chain will invest at least £2 million in the build, which it says will create 60 new jobs for the town.
