A woman in her 50s has died following a crash between Leamington and Kenilworth, which saw her van flip and end up in a ditch.

Warwickshire Police is appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened at around 4.40pm on Tuesday (2 January) on the A425 Kenilworth Road just outside Leamington.

A VW caddy van was being driven when it is understood to have left the road, flipped, and ended up in a ditch near the Riverside Hotel.

Emergency services including fire and ambulance attended the scene along with police officers but, despite their best efforts, the driver - a woman in her 50s - was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man, who was a passenger in the van, was assessed by paramedics before being released without injury.

The woman's next of kin has been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers from the force.

"Enquiries are continuing and we're encouraging anyone who was travelling along the stretch of road that saw the incident, the moments prior to the collision, or the manner in which the VW was being driven to speak to us," a police statement said.

"If you have information or footage that can help our ongoing investigation, please contact the force quoting incident 252 of 2 January."

The road was closed for an extended period of time yesterday from Chesford Grange to Blackdown Island as emergency services attended the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service statement added: "Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car from Strensham attended the incident.

"On arrival, ambulance staff found firefighters carrying out CPR on the woman driver. Ambulance staff took over and provided advanced life support, but sadly, it wasn't possible to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene.

"A man in the rear of the vehicle was extricated and assessed on an ambulance but was uninjured and discharged by the crew."
