The three-week closure of the A46 for a new HS2 to be moved into place is likely to take place in May, a Kenilworth Town Council report has said.

However, the final date of the works will not be confirmed until after the two weekend closures of the dual carriageway this February.

The A46 will be shut between Coventry and Thickthorn on the weekends of February 7-9 and February 14-17 for preparatory works.

Town councillors have revealed HS2 and National Highways will assess the impact of the short closures on local roads before confirming details of the three-week works.

"Details will be published once they have been able to assess the success of the traffic management associated with the weekend closures," Cllr Adrian Marsh told the most recent town council meeting.

During the weekend closures, traffic lights will be installed on St John's roundabout in Kenilworth to minimise disruption.

Traffic lights may also be installed on the Thickthorn roundabout but this is yet to be confirmed.

The closures in February are for changes to the 'vehicle restraint system', central reservations and some "advance works on the cross-carriageway drainage".

"To complete these works safely we will install temporary full weekend closures of the A46," HS2 said.

"To ensure the safety of our workforce, we will be closing a section of the A46 between Festival Island (Coventry) and Thickthorn Island (Kenilworth) over the weekends."

HS2 has recently released images of its works along the A46.
