Warwickshire is set to receive over £200,000,000 to upgrade its roads and public transport.

The money, which has been reallocated from funding that would have been used for the HS2 network, was confirmed today (February 26) by the government.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced at the Conservative Party Conference in October that the rail link between the Midlands and Manchester would be scrapped, and the £36 billion which would have been invested would be spent on transport elsewhere.

The PM said the money could be used instead for a range of different projects which were better value for money and could be implemented more quickly.

And now some £4.7 billion will be handed out to councils outside big cities in the Midlands and northern England through the Local Transport Fund.

The government today released the breakdown for each local authority, which revealed Warwickshire will be given £203,717,000.

Councils will be able to choose which local transport improvements to invest in, including refurbishing bus stations, filling potholes and installing more electric vehicle charging points.

The money is expected to be available from 2025, which the Conservatives say will give councils time to draw up plans so they are ready to go when the cash arrives.

The funding will run until 2032 and will be used in line with the three priorities the government has set out:

  • Drive better connectivity within our towns, suburbs and cities
  • Drive better connectivity between our towns and cities
  • Improve everyday local journeys for people

Labour said the scheme was just a "back of a fag packet plan".
