WARWICKSHIRE: Road scheme on track
The project team behind a £10m road scheme in Nuneaton say work is on track and should be completed by the winter of 2022/23.
But they refused to commit to the addition of a cycle route along part of Bermuda Road, insisting that they would have to see if the money was available.
The Bermuda Connectivity highway scheme will open up an existing bridge to two-way traffic which will improve links to Bermuda Park railway station along with local businesses and amenities.
Team leader Dan Cressell told this week's meeting of Warwickshire County Council's communities overview and scrutiny committee that work was progressing well.
He said: "The next steps we are looking at are in terms of the actual bridge works themselves. There are a lot of discussions in terms of diversions, road closures and lane closures along the A444.
"In terms of finance, as things stand at the moment we are within budget. We have spent £3.4m and things are looking pretty good. We are due to finish in winter 22/23."
Earlier in the meeting, Cllr Keith Kondakor, from Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, outlined some of the things he felt were needed to make the project more environmentally friendly and acceptable to residents.
He said: "We need to sort out the bus service along this new route and we need it to have a weight limit because you are going to pay £1.5m noise compensation for driving lorries past people's homes and if we can minimise that noise it would mitigate some of the harm.
"We also need to look at an average speed camera along the route – it is quite a long route through a residential area and we need it to be a nice 30 or 20 mph limit.
"We have a climate change emergency and have residents who will be badly affected by this scheme. This is a massive mistake but we should try and mitigate the problems as much as possible, look at noise, speeding and get the cycling and bus connectivity as good as possible.
"One good thing back in February was that the portfolio holder agreed to extend the cycle route along part of the length of Bermuda Road and I hope officers will agree that is actually happening."
On the subject of the cycle route, Mr Cresswell said: "Design works are still being undertaken for those extra works but once they are completed and costed up then we will see where we are with the budget. We hope the designs for the extra pieces of work will be due in the next couple of months."
