Update after multiple Warwickshire tips closed under unanticipated weekend rush
By James Smith 27th Mar 2026
Recycling centres in Warwickshire this week struggled to meet the demand of "much higher than expected" numbers of visitors.
Skips at local tips fell up "more quickly than normal" last weekend as Warwickshire County Council said "unusually mild weather" led to more users.
This came after the centres at Stockton and Burton Farm reached capacity on Sunday and users were directed to the other sites.
The knock-on effect saw Leamington's Princes Drive recycling centre shut on Monday morning (March 23) as every skip was full.
Kenilworth's Cherry Orchard centre then closed on Wednesday after users were directed there.
A council statement said: "Unusually mild weather led to much higher than expected visitor numbers at Warwickshire's recycling centres over the weekend 21 – 22 March, causing skips to fill more quickly than normal.
"Because our onward recycling and disposal facilities are not permitted to operate on Saturday afternoons or Sundays, once onsite capacity is reached, we are unable to accept further waste until collections resume."
All tips in the county have been fully open since Wednesday afternoon.
The council did not directly address Nub News' question whether the removal of booking slots had caused the centres to get overwhelmed.
"We have planned extra haulage in the run up to the weekend and we expect Princes Drive and Cherry Orchard to be able to stay open this weekend," the statement continued.
"However, we are limited due to there being no locations open to receive waste on Saturday afternoon or Sunday.
"We are reviewing the issues experienced over the last weekend and the steps needed to manage demand more effectively during busy periods, including over the Easter weekend, and we continue to update our website with the latest information on site availability."
