Town councillors have thrown their unanimous support behind plans to create a new youth council in Kenilworth.

Members at Kenilworth Town Council backed the pilot scheme last week.

Cllr Mark Stevens said: "In principle it is trying to get more representation from young people in the town, to give them an insight into the civic life which we participate in.

"And to empower young people to understand what is going on in local government and for them to potentially make a difference with their different perspectives on life.

"And maybe to deliver some youth-specific led programmes and campaigns."

No decisions have been made on the structure of the council yet.

Councillors Alison Insley and Josh Payne will lead bringing the plans forward.

"I think this is a really important initiative as we have had so many discussions over the years about struggling to engage with young people across the town," Cllr James Kennedy said.

"This seems to be a really good, formal opportunity, working on a template that has been used in other similar councils, and we can adapt it to our own purposes."

Councillors commented about the size, the age range and the name of the group.

Meanwhile, Cllr Richard Dickson added: "It is not us that is going to make this work, it is the young people who are going to make this work."
