A triple killer who attacked an elderly lady in Kenilworth and dumped the body of one of his other victims on the edge of Leamington Spa is suspected to be behind the attack of the infamous Soham murderer Ian Huntley in prison this week.

The BBC has reported, Anthony Russell - who murdered three people in a week-long spree in October 2020 - is suspected to be behind the attack of Huntley in HMP Frankland on Thursday (February 26).

Huntley was sentenced to 40 years behind bars for murdering schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Cambridgeshire in 2002.

According to Durham Constabulary he remains in hospital in a "serious condition" after being attacked with a makeshift weapon.

Police have previously said a man in his 40s was "in detention" following the incident but had not been arrested "at this stage".

Multiple publications have reported the attacker is suspected to be Russell who is serving his own life sentence for the murders of Julie Williams, her son David Williams and Nicole McGregor, whose body was found in woodland near the River Leam.

He admitted the murders and was later convicted of raping Miss McGregor - who was five months pregnant at the time - before strangling her to death.

Ms Williams and Mr Williams were murdered at separate flats in Coventry a few days before.

In the same week he travelled to Kenilworth where he robbed a 71-year-old woman, dragging her along the ground as he took £200 from her.

He later lured Miss McGregor to Newbold Comyn on the promise of drugs where he attacked her before dumping her body in the undergrowth.

Durham Constabulary confirmed an investigation is underway into the attack at HMP Frankland.

Huntley was reportedly discovered lying in a pool of blood after the attack in the workshop.

He has been attacked in prison multiple times before.

In 2002 he killed two 10-year-old girls after luring the girls back to his home and leaving their bodies in a ditch in Suffolk.
