Transport schemes should have benefited Kenilworth and places 'suffering' with HS2 - town's MP

The town's MP has asked when Kenilworth will benefit from a transport project it actually needs and wants as the government announces a rollout of travel projects.

Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander last week announced 50 rail and road projects "touching every corner of the country" and supporting 42,000 new jobs.

But MP for Kenilworth and Southam Sir Jeremy Wright pointed to HS2 saying it impacts the constituency greatly but does not bring any benefit.

"The Secretary of State has made reference to those areas of the country that wanted transport infrastructure projects and have not got them," he said.

"May I ask her to spare a thought for those places that have got transport infrastructure projects that they do not want?

"She knows that High Speed 2 passes through my constituency but delivers no benefit to the people I represent.

"In future rounds of consideration for rail and road projects, will she consider giving priority to those places that are suffering in that way, but which have a real need for other types of transport infrastructure that perhaps they deserve as compensation?"

In response Ms Alexander said HS2 would ultimately benefit the people of Kenilworth and Southam.

"With respect to HS2, one of the benefits is that when the high-speed trains move on to new lines, we will be able to improve other regional services on the existing line," she said.

"Although the right hon. and learned gentleman may feel that the HS2 line has limited value to his constituents at the moment, getting it up and running will open up other options for rail travel moving forward."

Schemes announced by the government last week included the "long awaited" A66 Northern Trans-Pennine route and Portishead to Bristol city centre rail line.
