Town council moves to protect 'key part of Kenilworth's heritage'

The town council is making moves to protect a "key part" of Kenilworth heritage after it was recently left in a "poor state of repair".
Kenilworth Town Council is set to ask for the Borrowell Well to be added to the local list of local heritage assets and potentially apply for it to become a listed monument by Historic England.
The well on Borrowell Lane dates back to when the castle was built.
With that part of the town being built on clay, it was difficult to find sources of water until the spring was discovered on what is now Borrowell Lane.
This provided water to the castle, the abbey and that side of Kenilworth. 'Borrowell' is said to be a corruption of the words 'borough' and 'well'.
Speaking at the most recent town council meeting, Cllr Alan Chalmers said: "This is a key part of Kenilworth's heritage which is in a sorry state of affairs.
"I am very grateful to Cllr Dickson for bringing it to our attention.
"There was some wooden protection which has fallen in and is now in a state of disrepair.
"We have explored it a bit more, and have managed to get something to stop people falling in it.
"This is a really important part of Kenilworth's heritage. "
Town councillors unanimously backed the calls to provide greater protection for the well.
The well currently has plastic barriers around it.
Cllr Neal Eaton added: "Not only is it in private ownership, it is in unknown private ownership.
"I think this course of action is splendid."
