The old school site on Leyes Lane has taken a step closer to development, it was announced last night (1 October).

It was also announced that Homes England will conduct a site survey with a view to submitting a development plan.

Cllr Jess Melrose, Labour's lead on Warwick District Council, gave her first speech as lead for Housing, announcing the development.

An investigation into decisions made by the previous administration will be conducted it was announced. In particular, questions will be asked about:

· Why the loan to purchase the site was taken on at a variable rate rather than a fixed rate?

· Why the price paid appears higher than the independent valuation?

· Why no contingency plan was put in place?

· Why the risks of the project do not appear to have been adequately considered?

Cllr Melrose made it clear these questions are about learning, not blame. She committed to meeting with the Kenilworth Town Council and residents to answer questions directly about the site.

She confirmed that the joint Green-Labour administration is committed to delivering affordable, energy-efficient homes efficiently, with lower risk to taxpayers stating: "This administration is fully committed to driving this project forward"

Nicola Jones, Chair of the Kenilworth & Southam Labour Party commented: "It's good to see the district council promising action and accountability. This is exactly what local people want from their representative".

A report to the district council cabinet will be made in October presenting the options, with a business case due in Spring 2026.
