Plans to demolish a local special school and replace it with 25 houses look set to be given the green light.

Coventry City Council revealed its plans for Woodfield Primary School in May, with the local authority wanting to build a much bigger SEND school at the former Woodlands Academy site on Broad Lane.

The council has also planned to knock down Woodfield's Hawthorn Lane secondary school site to make space for a further 129 houses.

CCC's planning committee will discuss the two schemes next week - planners have recommended that both be granted planning permission.

Despite eight objections being made to the Stoneleigh plans, a council report said: "The release of the land for housing would not only positively contribute to the council’s housing requirement, but it would also allow the delivery of a new expanded SEND school on the former Woodlands School site on Broad Lane.

"This would result in several benefits, including improving the provision of special needs educational in the city by being able to increase pupil numbers and by combining the primary school currently on Stoneleigh Road and the secondary school currently on Hawthorn Lane onto one site with the educational, resource and cost benefits that will bring.

"In addition, the Grade II listed buildings of the former Woodlands School site would be repurposed for educational use and refurbished with the site also being able to expand community sport use on the underused former Woodlands School site."

Ofsted recently said Woodfield was taking 'effective action' to overcome its inadequate rating.

If approved, the plans will see the Stoneleigh Road school, which lies within the Kenilworth Road Conservation Area, replaced mostly by three-bed houses.

The council said at least a quarter of these would be affordable homes.

A planning application for the part demolition and rebuilding of Woodlands School has also been recommended for approval.

The council's planning committee will discuss all three applications on Thursday, July 21.
