Clients at Waverley have been getting active as the Kenilworth day centre puts wellness first.

The Waverley Road centre facilitates a range of physical activities during its day opportunity for older people.

Whether it is seated exercise sessions led by Linda – Waverley's trained 'Love to Move' instructor – a game of boules with the befriending volunteers or lively competition on the table tennis table, Waverley is keeping its community active.

The NHS says older adults should do some form of physical activity every day to improve health and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

To this end, Waverley has also been putting on fun-themed exercise sessions from gentle stretching to 'Cowboy Curling'.

"Taking part in activities like these, as well as 'brain' activities including word games, crosswords, card bingo and quizzes, makes a real difference to our clients," the Waverley team said.

"This along with the chance to socialise, chat and enjoy a two-course home cooked meal all help to promote physical and mental wellbeing.

"Remaining connected and engaged also reduces the risk of becoming isolated and the potential negative impact on physical and mental health."

The NHS website says adults aged 65 and over should aim to:

  • Be physically active every day, even if it's just light activity
  • Do activities that improve strength, balance and flexibility on at least two days a week
  • Do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity if you are already active, or a combination of both reduce time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity
