A "shocking" Family Court judgment has laid bare the financial and emotional devastation caused by narcissistic and controlling behaviour during divorce proceedings.

The case, which involved an unnamed Warwickshire couple, is being described by solicitors at Mander Hadley as a "cautionary tale" of how one person's refusal to cooperate can ruin lives.

Stuart Daniel, Director, Head of the Family Department at Mander Hadley and the wife's legal representative, said: "This is one of the most destructive divorce cases I've ever seen. The judge described the husband's behaviour as a 'scorched earth' approach.

"He sabotaged the couple's business, misled the court, and did everything he could to deprive his wife of a fair settlement."

The case at Family Court at Coventry involved a husband who made clear threats to "wreck the business" and leave his wife with nothing.

He followed through, leaving a "once-successful" family enterprise in ruins.

The couple, who previously had £80,000 in savings and a business turning over more than £350,000 a year, are now burdened with personal debts, legal fees and a destroyed financial future.

The judgment found that instead of engaging in honest negotiations, the husband refused to comply with court directions, failed to disclose key financial information and even attempted to delay the trial under dubious pretences.

Meanwhile, he took multiple luxury holidays, spent thousands on designer goods, and funnelled unexplained payments to his new partner, all while claiming to be destitute and receiving universal credit.

The Family Court found the husband had hidden assets, misled the authorities and manipulated the legal process.

In contrast, the wife was described as calm, credible and transparent, despite the emotional toll of the proceedings.

In a damning judgment, the court awarded the wife the couple's remaining land, a maintenance order and a full pension sharing order.

The husband was also ordered to indemnify her against potential business-related liabilities and pay legal costs.

Subsequent to the judgment, the husband still failed to comply with court orders.

For that he was ordered to pay the wife's additional Court costs and was given a custodial sentence.

Stuart Daniel added: "This case is a stark reminder that narcissistic behaviour in divorce is not just emotionally harmful, it can destroy financial stability too.

"Divorce should be about reaching a fair outcome, not about punishment or control.

"The courts have powers to ensure redress and achieve a fair outcome, and this case shows that the courts will utilise those powers, which extend to imprisoning those who demonstrate contempt."

Mander Hadley is urging those going through a difficult separation to seek early legal advice and ensure they have professional support, especially where controlling behaviour may be a factor.
