Kenilworth businesses are hoping National Grid works in the town centre will bring an end to multiple power cuts over the past few weeks.

Retailers and hospitality businesses along Warwick Road and The Square have been hit with several power cuts either side of Christmas, with some saying they have had to turn customers away as a result.

National Grid has since had temporary traffic lights on Warwick Road as it works to find a permanent solution.

While motorists have complained about the disruption, the works are expected to continue into next week.

A National Grid Electricity Distribution spokesperson said: "A complex transformer fault at our Library Substation has required ongoing repairs by engineers which are due to be completed by the end of the month.

"Unfortunately, an alternative power supply from another substation has also suffered faults which caused power cuts. To remedy this 50m of underground power cable needs to be replaced

"Engineers cannot work safely on the cable while it is live and several short power outages have been needed in recent days to allow safe repairs.

"It is not always possible to give advance notice of these interruptions which often must be carried out immediately to prevent further damage to the network.

"There may be further brief interruptions to electricity supplies as repairs are ongoing and currently planned to be completed by 30 January.

"We apologise for the inconvenience to customers and are keen to reassure them that we are working to minimise disruption and complete repairs as soon as possible."

On Monday (January 19) there was also a power fault with the temporary traffic lights which meant local PCSOs had to use 'stop/go' boards to control the traffic. This has since been rectified.

One business owner told Nub News: "Hopefully whatever they are doing now is a permanent fix.

"The power cuts have impacted us and the other businesses in the town centre."
