At the end of February the war memorial at the top of Abbey Fields was rededicated during a service led by Reverend Stella Bailey.

Following the celebration of the monument's centenary we have taken a quick look back at its history.

Plans to build the memorial were first approved on 21 January 1920 at a public town meeting.

Initially it was suggested that a a public hall and clubhouse for discharged soldiers was built.

But it soon became clear that such a scheme was too ambitious and would have been too expensive.

Instead a committee chaired by Cllr Charles Randall was formed to raise money for the memorial.

Designed by F. W. Doyle-Jones, the tall stone obelisk was built at Abbey Hill with the names of 129 men and one woman from the town who died during the First World War.

A further nine names were added later.

It was inscribed with the message: In grateful memory of those from Kenilworth who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1919. Lest we forget.

The Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire Lord Leigh unveiled the monument on Sunday, February 26 1922 at a dedication service in the pouring rain.

Following the Second World War, new cast bronze plaques were added with the names of those who died in the respective world wars.

These were added in 1951 with the names of 68 Kenilworth men and women who died during the Second World War.

One more name from the Korean war was added in 1952.

Local historian Susan Tall has also compiled a list of those from Kenilworth or connected to the town who were not added to the memorial.

With the memorial reaching its centenary, a memorial bench was also unveiled next to it during February's service.

The bench has been funded by donations from the people of Kenilworth.

"With the memorial opened a hundred years ago we really wanted to mark the occasion," said chairman of Kenilworth RBL Cllr George Illingworth.

"There are of course a lot of local families who have names on the memorial, so this is very important."
