The results of the Warwick Road speed restrictions consultation have been released by Warwickshire County Council.

Kenilworth Nub News reported in June that the council had decided not to build speed bumps along Kenilworth's thoroughfare, but that no decision had been made on the 20mph speed limit.

WCC has yet to issue any formal announcement on the matter.

However, the reports of the consultation were published on the council's websites amongst papers ready for tomorrow's (July 19) portfolio holders' meeting.

The report confirms that speed bumps will not be built along Warwick Road, and that a decision on the 20mph speed limit is still to be reached.

Councillors will discuss the report on Monday.

What does the report say?

Over 130 people responded to the council's consultation, which ended in May, with 105 people objecting to the proposals. Only 17 notices of 'support in principle' were received.

Of those objections, 48 said Waverley Road and Priory Road would also need traffic calming to deal with displaced traffic from Warwick Road.

Other comments included concern over increased emissions, the impact of forcing traffic onto other roads and support for a 20mph speed limit but not speed bumps.

The report also makes it clear that funding is not actually available for speed bumps to be built. WCC estimates the costs to be £640,000. With only £510,000 available from a variety of funds, the council could not afford to build the traffic calming measures along the road.

The report also states that no decision will be made on the 20mph speed limit. This is because "the local county councillor [Cllr Richard Spencer] has requested that changes to the extent of the speed limit be investigated and, therefore, this will be the subject of further investigation and potentially a revised proposal."

Liberal Democrat town and district Councillor Richard Dickson submitted a petition to WCC last month calling for a wider 20mph zone in Kenilworth. This was submitted just a day before WCC announced plans to investigate speed limit reductions in all Warwickshire towns.
