HS2 is inviting residents to vote on the name of a new machine which will dig a one-mile tunnel under Long Itchington Wood.

The third 'Tunnel Boring Machine' (TBM) is to be given one of three names, each with close associations to Warwickshire.

Residents had previously been invited to submit suggestions, with 180 entries given. Now they can vote for their favourite of the three.

The three names are:

- Anne - named after Anne Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare.

- Dorothy - named after Dorothy Hodgkin, first British female Nobel Prize winner in chemistry.

- Mary Ann - named after Mary Ann Evans, better known by her pen name George Eliot.

The TBM will begin construction of the tunnel later this year. The 2,000-tonne TBM, manufactured in Germany by Herrenknecht, will be around 10 metres wide and will take about five months to complete the first bore of two parallel tunnels.

Once it has dug the first tunnel, it will be transported back to the start to dig the second.

The two other TBM's have already been named 'Florence' after Florence Nightingale, and 'Cecilia' after pioneering astronomer and astrophysicist, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin.

Residents have until the end of June to vote. The winner is expected to be announced later in the summer.
