Residents may get the chance to see archaeological discoveries at Abbey Fields leisure centre
Local residents may be given the chance to see the recent archaeological discoveries at Abbey Fields before the new swimming pools are built.
The remains of a medieval wall were unearthed under the leisure centre last August, slowing down the construction works while they were investigated.
The find was thought to be part of a water mill, and was discovered close to Finham Brook.
AR Demolition has since found another set of stones closer to the children's play area, thought to be the foundations of a 'high status' building.
On a recent tour of the site, programme manager Padraig Herlihy told Nub News that discussions were underway with Historic England and Archaeology Warwickshire to see how these stones could be preserved and potentially put on display as part of the new leisure centre.
He also said the wall close to the brook would likely be documented and then destroyed, as it is too tall to be incorporated into the new building.
Mr Herlihy also said he hoped to arrange with AR and contractor Kier for the site to be opened up to the public so they could see the remains themselves.
He did however add that there may be short notice for the event, given the nature of the construction.
Guests at the recent visit to the site, which included leader of Warwick District Council Cllr Andrew Day, were also told that the water currently filling the swimming pool on site will need to be removed before work can continue.
At the time it was being tested to see if it was safe to add to the water in Abbey Fields lake.
If not it will have to be taken elsewhere in a tanker.
Castle Farm
Nub News was also shown round the works at Castle Farm, along with Sir Jeremy Wright MP and Mayor of Kenilworth Cllr Sam Louden-Cooke.
The steel frame is now fully in place and concrete slabs to create the first floor were being installed.
Local scout and guide leaders were also given a chance to see where their new headquarters would sit, and were assured by Cllr Day that they would not be forced out of Kenilworth School until the new sports centre opened.
Power to the building is expected to be turned on in April 2023.
WDC has also had to close one of the paths at Castle Farm to allow for drainage works.
The new multi-million pound leisure centre will include a sports hall, 80 station gym and fitness studios as well as a new base for local scouts and guides.
