Police continue to appeal for information in the hunt for a convicted Warwickshire murderer who absconded from prison last week.

Matthew Armstrong is one of two prisoners to abscond from HMP Leyhill on Thursday 1 January.

The 35-year-old is still missing alongside fellow escapee Daniel Washbourne.

Officers successfully arrested a third inmate, Aaron Thomas, on Saturday (January 3) who is also believed to have escaped prison.

Avon and Somerset Police has released a renewed appeal for information and has revealed more about the timeline after the prisoners fled Leyhill.

On Saturday 3 January two men matching their descriptions were caught on CCTV in Ashley Road, Bristol, at about 10.35am. They were seen walking towards the Stokes Croft area.

On Sunday, at approximately 9.35-9.45am, a man was captured on CCTV walking along Filton Road and then Gloucester Road North in Filton, stopping at one stage to look at bus timetables.

The man is seen wearing a burgundy coat matching the one worn by Armstrong when he left HMP Leyhill.

Police believe he continued to walk along the same road and was seen in the Patchway area at about 11.05-11.15am.

The force said neither man has connections in the Avon and Somerset and have likely travelled further afield.

Armstrong still has links to Warwickshire.

"While we continue to keep an open mind, we believe there is a distinct possibility that they will have sought to travel outside of our force area to try to avoid detection, so we are continuing to work closely with other police forces in other parts of the country," a force statement said.

Armstrong has been in prison after being found guilty of murder during a robbery in the late 2000's.

He was convicted for killing 54-year-old Paul Smith in Rugby town centre.

Mr Smith had been returning home from the pub when he was attacked by Armstrong and his 14-year-old accomplice who beat him around the head with a brick.

The pair then robbed him of his phone and wallet and left him on the pavement in a pool of blood.

Armstrong is described by police as white, male, about 5ft 9ins, with ginger hair and scars on his forehead.

He was last seen wearing a burgundy/orange coat, grey cap, grey tracksuit suit bottoms with blue on the side, and black boots.

Washbourne, 40, has links to Herefordshire and has convictions for violence and false imprisonment.

The police added: "Detectives are also following up on other lines of enquiry, which we are unable to go into detail about at this time, because to do so could hinder our investigation."
