Town councillors have welcomed "really positive" progress towards improving the safety around the new Kenilworth School.

The campaign to make it safer to walk and cycle to the Glasshouse Lane site has been running for over two years, with Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) and Kenilworth Multi Academy Trust (KMAT) leading the efforts.

Town councillors have already signed off on a £25,000 spend to help pay for safety improvements around the site, having previously commissioned a review into the local roads which uncovered a variety of 'significant' problems.

And speaking at last week's KTC meeting, Cllr Zoe Leventhal said: "The good news is that the work of this town council, jointly with KMAT, has made significant progress.

"Not necessarily physical changes on the ground yet, but a real willingness and togetherness to moving forward.

"We had a really positive meeting in August between senior people at KMAT, county councillors, and council officers.

"We have an action plan to meet twice termly, we have a plan to have a stakeholder briefing in the second half term, so we can get the public involved.

"And we have the support of the county council officers to progress some tangible improvements."

She added: "It feels like a sudden change in focus which I think has been prompted by the really sobering report we got from The Transportation Consultancy."

The £25k spend will come from the council's CIL budget - money raised from local housing developers towards local infrastructure.

It will also allow KTC to apply for further funding.

On the back of this, a number of suggestions for Glasshouse Lane have been made, including a 'left-in / left-out' restriction at the school as well as speed bumps and tables.

None of these details have been signed off yet, and will require further discussions and costing.

Also speaking at last week's meeting, Cllr James Kennedy reiterated the fact neighbours are "complaining bitterly" about parents parking around the school on neighbouring roads, with a Warwickshire County Council survey into this being repeatedly delayed.
