Questions remain unanswered about the future of a former landfill site in Kenilworth which could become a public open space.

Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) has been working on the project for the land at Cherry Orchard for well over a year, as it looks to turn a piece of private land - which is already informally used by dog walkers - into a community green space.

The project has been delayed as the council waited for a 'management plan' from its colleagues at Warwickshire County Council and Warwick District Council which actually own the site.

But with the document having now been received, KTC said there are still many issues which need resolving.

"There is quite a lot of tidying up to do," council leader Cllr James Kennedy told last week's meeting.

"And it is not immediately apparent what the next tasks are.

"The second major concern is that the issue of access to the site is not mentioned.

"The issue being, it is a closed site, a former landfill site with potentially risky parts of it where there is still gas coming out of the landfill.

"Strictly speaking, as it says on the notice on the end of Adcock Drive, public admission is forbidden."

He continued: "It is going to be very difficult to do anything because we cannot have a public open space which is in theory is closed, has potential risks and no obvious sense of control."

KTC has agreed to write back to the county council to ask for clarity on the future access for the site.

The town council is already confident it can find a number of "very willing" volunteers to help maintain the site.
