Possible new football stadium near Kenilworth 'a long way off' says new Coventry City owner
The new owner of Coventry City Football Club has said building a new football stadium near Kenilworth is "a long way off".
The Championship club has rented the Coventry Building Society Arena since returning to the city in 2021, having previously announced plans with the University of Warwick to build a new stadium near Kenilworth which will also form part of a proposed eco-park.
However, a planning application for the development is yet to be submitted, and new majority owner Doug King says his first priority is securing the long-term future at the CBS Arena.
CCFC has a deal in place with ground owners Frasers Group to play football at the stadium until the end of the season.
"I'm very positive with the outlook for the situation," he told BBC CWR.
"We've certainly had some very loose conversations.
"It is only with us until the end of the season so it is right at the top of my list to focus on that.
"We want a strong relationship with Frasers Group. They're a very professional outfit. They understand sport. They have owned football clubs previously. They have a broad interest round the region and the stadium is a part of that."
Mr King made a last minute bid to buy the stadium himself at the end of last year but it was instead sold to the firm owned by Mike Ashley.
And talking about plans to move the club near to Kenilworth, Mr King said it was not an immediate priority.
"I believe the club should be at the stadium for the foreseeable future," he added.
"In today's world, a new stadium is a long way off.
"There's a lot of work that's been done on that project. It's not top of my radar right now. The reality is that it's something for the future, and the priority is the discussions we have with the Frasers Group."
