Popular Kenilworth footpath hit by extra HS2 disruption
By James Smith 8th Nov 2026
Another three months of disruption to footpaths around Kenilworth has been announced by HS2.
Public rights of way W164 and W165x in Crackley were due to reopen in 2024, with this pushed back multiple times in the past two years.
Earlier in 2026, HS2 said disruption would end at the end of November but this has now been pushed back to next spring.
"We have previously advised you of the temporary diversion for PRoW W164 which was from Friday 17 July 2026 to Monday 30 November 2026," HS2 said.
"Due to the ongoing nature of the works this diversion has now been extended and is set to open on Monday 1 March 2027."
Both footpaths connect to the Kenilworth Greenway and head north towards Coventry.
Recently, a reader wrote to Nub News to complain about the temporary surface of the diversions.
They said: "Since August there has been a significant diversion of the footpath that goes over the HS2 works in Crackley, connecting Kenilworth and the University of Warwick.
"The tarmac path was broken up and a temporary gravel path put down.
"This was done in quite a haphazard way to make cycling and walking uncomfortable (and resulting in a few burst tyres because of the sharp surface).
"Despite a number of complaints, Balfour Beatty have made only minor improvements to it.
"Now, with the wet weather, there is a large body of standing water that is causing a serious impediment to pedestrians and cyclists. HS2 don't seem to want to know."
