Plans to increase the cost of parking permits across Warwickshire have been scrapped.

Warwickshire County Council's (WCC) cabinet - the Reform UK and Conservative councillors in charge - were due to discuss plans to nearly double the price, but the scheme has now been shelved.

A council report showed permits have not increased from £25 annually since 2014, with some neighbouring councils charging their residents far more.

Residents can have up to three permits in Warwickshire.

It had been proposed to jump this up to £45 per year for the first permit, with the second and third being more expensive.

Council officers had warned it "is no longer financially sustainable" to keep the fees at this level as the income "does not cover the cost of delivering the service".

However, the Reform UK-led administration has scrapped the idea.

The move would have added £247,000 to next year's balance sheet and £537,000 per year by 2030-31.

The news comes ahead of WCC's budget setting meeting this week.

Plans to bring in on-street parking charges "to address congestion and road safety concerns" in Alcester, Atherstone, Henley-on-Arden, Shipston-on-Stour and Southam from April 2028 have also been shelved at a combined cost of more than £1.2 million, although price increases in areas that already have the charges – Leamington, Warwick, Kenilworth and Stratford – have been kept in.

Council leader Cllr George Finch told Nub News: "We took out the parking charges because that it not right for residents.

"We took out the parking permit increases because that is not right for residents as of now."
