A recent cleanse of the A46 in Warwick district between Coventry and Stratford recovered over 12,000kg of litter.

Warwick District Council's contractors idverde carry out the cleanse of the 18km stretch of the A46 including the lay-bys and central reservation twice per year.

The latest cleanse took place over 10 nights in October.

The team use a rolling lane closure to direct traffic away from the area they're cleansing and work through the night to clear litter and debris from the roadside. 12,530kg was collected in total, a slight reduction of 3,000kg in the amount collected the same time last year.

Cllr Will Roberts, portfolio holder for neighbourhood, said: "Whilst it's pleasing to see that the overall amount of litter collected from the A46 has reduced, it's still a wholly unnecessary exercise when drivers could just as easily keep their waste in their vehicle and take it home with them, rather than willfully discarding it on such a busy road and present a danger to other road users and wildlife.

"I would like to thank the hardworking team at idverde for working in such hazardous conditions to cleanse the A46, and for the work they do to keep our district tidy."
