More than 1,000 local residents including dozens of school children went to see the archaeological remains discovered at Abbey Fields this week.

The site opening on Tuesday (2 October) was an opportunity for members of the public to see for themselves the medieval complex of buildings associated with Kenilworth Abbey that have been unearthed on the site.

Visitors were also able to talk to Warwick District Council's project team and representatives from Archaeology Warwickshire.

Cllr Ian Davison, leader of the council, said: "We were delighted by the extremely high level of interest shown by the people of Kenilworth and further afield in the amazing discoveries made and are sorry that we have been unable to open the site for longer.

"However, now that Archaeology Warwickshire have finished their work on the Abbey Fields site and the results of their investigations have been recorded, as agreed with Historic England the medieval structures found will need to be carefully re-covered with native soil, so that they can be preserved in the best possible condition.

"I would like to thank our partners AR Demolition and Archaeology Warwickshire for their contribution towards making the day such a success."

A 3D, interactive model of the remains can be found here.
