A new home healthcare provider in Balsall Common has been told it requires improvement after its first inspection from the Care Quality Commission.

A recently published report found that Social Care Academy Ltd did not always provide a safe service and was not always well led.

Whilst the report found that "people spoke positively" about the Balsall Street East firm, inspectors found that new staff were not always checked fully before they started work, and that some patient risk assessments lacked detail.

The company was assessed in five different areas: safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness and leadership.

The CQC found that safety and leadership both required improvement, whilst the other areas were rated as good.

"The service management and leadership was inconsistent," the report said.

"Leaders and the culture they created did not always support the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care."

It added: "Some aspects of the service were not always safe and there was limited assurance about safety. There was an increased risk that people could be harmed."

Caring for 11 patients, the Balsall Common company says it specialises in caring for patients with dementia, physical and learning disabilities and sensory impairments.

And despite the concerns the report added that the management recognised the shortcomings and had put plans in place to fix the problems.

It said: "Despite this short fall, staff demonstrated they knew how to support the person to keep them safe.

"We highlighted this to the registered manager who told us they would update the risk assessments, to include more detail."

The report added: "People felt safe with staff. One person told us, 'I feel very safe with the staff, they are all great, very kind'."
