More fish are expected to die in Abbey Fields after Warwick District Council was told to stop filling the lake with water to keep the fish alive.

The council had announced on Wednesday that it was using mains water to keep the lake topped up during the hot weather following multiple reports that fish were dying in the heat.

WDC said using mains water was the only viable option as a water pump could not be used to aerate the water because the levels were too low.

Moving the fish would also have been too difficult and the fish would have been unlikely to survive.

But Severn Trent Water has put an end to the lake being filled "due to the impact on the regional network".

"Due to the continued hot, dry weather there will inevitably sadly be more casualties," a council spokesperson said.

"Warwick District Council understands how distressing this situation is for members of the public.

"It has been a very sad few days for council officers and contractors who have been dealing with this incident.

"The Environment Agency are currently working at 150 sites across England who are experiencing similar conditions."

WDC said it has been in close communication with the Environment Agency, Severn Trent and Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service as well as the local angling club.
