Council planners have given the green light to major renovations at Kenilworth Dogs Trust.

Warwick District Council has signed off on planning permission for one of the older buildings at the Honiley Road site to be demolished and replaced with a smaller, more modern 'training barn'.

The application - which was approved in September - states the Avon Block was constructed in 2004, and currently the centre has far more kennels than it needs.

The new building will include two new training areas, as well as storage and a kitchen.

"As part of our evolving strategy to enhance the rehoming process for dogs in our care, we have undertaken a comprehensive review of our operational needs at the centre," the application explained.

"This review has concluded that the current number of kennels exceeds our requirements.

"However, we have identified several key areas where targeted improvements will enable us to deliver more effective rehoming services within the local community."

Dogs Trust has been at the Haseley site since 1984.

The charity says this latest redevelopment will "improve the staff-to-dog ratio", which it hopes will "result in faster rehoming outcomes".

A small training building is also set to be removed.

"We propose to upgrade the existing exercise runs located at the rear of the site to provide enhanced facilities for outdoor training and enrichment," the application continued.

"This redevelopment will also facilitate improvements to staff car parking.

"These proposed changes reflect our commitment to continuous improvement and to providing the highest standards of care and rehoming support for dogs in our facility."

Signing off on the application, a report from the council said: "Officers are satisfied the development would constitute appropriate development in the green belt and would be of an acceptable design that does not pose harm to the amenity of neighbouring properties.

"The application is considered to represent a sustainable form of development that complies with the aforementioned local plan policies and national decision making policies, and is recommended for approval."
