The housing developer behind plans for 250 homes in Balsall Common has been handed a boost by councillors after its latest application was unanimously approved.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council's planning committee last week waved through Vistry Homes' 'reserved matters' application for the major development at Pheasant Oak Farm.

Councillors last year gave the green light to outline plans for the estate on land at Pheasant Oak Farm in Hob Lane off Waste Lane.

This latest application dealt with layout, appearance and landscaping arrangements for the new homes which will be built next to the historic Berkswell Windmill.

Despite further objections from residents, planning officers at the borough council recommended the application be approved.

"The submitted plans and design code demonstrate delivery a high-quality, landscape-led scheme in respect of the reserved matters of layout, scale, appearance and landscaping, that will complement and enhance the character of the area," a council report said.

Plans show half the new homes will be designated 'affordable'.

Vistry says the homes would be energy efficient including solar panels, air source heat pumps and electric vehicle charging provision.

Jeanette McGarry of Berkswell Windmill spoke at Friday's meeting and asked councillors to ensure the impact on the local area is minimised.

"We are asking this planning committee to ensure that the public open spaces are along Hobs Lane and Windmill Lane," she said.

"We are not suggesting there should be no housing.

"2026 is the bicentenary of the windmill and to ensure a lasting legacy is secured public open space and community area should be beside the farm house – it will provide a wonderful viewpoint of the and a safe area and enjoyment for residents, visitors and future generations to come."

After little debate, the application was unanimously voted through.
