Local businesses have been throwing their support behind an event this weekend aimed at boosting cycling across Kenilworth.

This summer, Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) is aiming to get people - especially young people - out on two wheels.

To this end, KTC's cycling delivery group is counting down to its big Cycling Awareness Day this Saturday (22 July) in Talisman Square.

The event aims to bring together lots of groups and local businesses all in one place – all focussed on getting people cycling.

There will be a particular emphasis on getting students engaged with cycling, with free courses on offer to them.

Running from 10am to 3pm, at the event there will be:

  • Free bike security marking
  • Free bike checks from the Repair Café (10am – 12pm)
  • New kit and discounts from Mike Vaughan Cycles
  • Advice and information from local cycling organisations
  • Free Road Confidence courses for Kenilworth students
  • A chance to win great Raffle prizes in aid of Cyclists Fighting Cancer

There will also be the opportunity to talk to members of the town council's cycling delivery group, Warwickshire Cycle Buddies, Warwickshire County Council Road Safety Education and Active Travel team, Kenilworth and Warwick Rural Police, The Cycle Recycler, the Repair Café and Mike Vaughan Cycles.

"An event like this is a great opportunity to get people in Kenilworth talking and learning about cycling," said Cllr Zoe Leventhal.

"It's intended to be for everyone, not just people who already cycle - from adults who'd like to get back on their bikes, to drivers wanting to understand how to drive safely alongside cyclists.

"And this summer, the town council's cycling delivery group is focussing on extra support for young people who are considering cycling to school, especially as the new Kenilworth School opens in September."

Raffle prizes include:

  • First prize: GB Kit Bag with four cycling jerseys from Cyclists Fighting Cancer - donated by Laura and Jason Kenney
  • Second prize: Breakfast for four at The Almanack in Kenilworth
  • Third prize: £30 Mike Vaughan Bikes Gift Voucher

Other great prizes have also been donated from Kenilworth Books, Tree House Bookshop, Time for Tea Kenilworth, Morning Sunshine Coffee, Costa Coffee, Forrest Coffee House, Waitrose, and Coffee on the Corner (gift voucher cake and a drink for two people).

"We have organised special student discounts with our local bike shop and free road confidence courses this summer for students (with support from Warwickshire County Council), as well as free bike checks and security marking at the event," added Cllr Alison Insley.

Saturday's event is a chance for everyone to come and find out more about these initiatives - and there is also raffle in aid of the charity Cyclists Fighting Cancer, with prizes generously donated by local businesses. Thanks to everyone supporting the event.
