Councillors are optimistic a promised link from a new housing estate to Kenilworth School will soon open.

As part of the planning permission for the huge Stoneleigh View estate on Glasshouse Lane, a gate was supposed to be provided to allow students to access the secondary school.

However, while the school opened in 2023 and many of the houses are now occupied, this is yet to be provided, meaning schoolchildren have to walk down to the busy Glasshouse Lane and along a section of road which has no pavement.

Speaking at last week's Kenilworth Town Council meeting, Cllr Zoe Leventhal provided an update.

"There has been significant progress - although it is not yet completed - in opening the Vistry Homes gate on Oakley Road between the school and the new development," she said.

"There was a site meeting which is being followed up with the district council to ensure that the condition within the original planning permission which requires Vistry to provide an opening is in effect as soon as possible to avoid students having to walk along a lack of pavemented road."

Cllr Leventhal's statement came as part of a regular update on improving safety around Glasshouse Lane for schoolchildren.

The town council has been working for several months to make it safer for children to walk to the new school, and is working to implement the findings of an independent report which said there were major safety issues around the busy road.

"We have continued to work well with our working group," Cllr Leventhal continued.

"Key updates are: we met in February and had a very productive meeting with the county council, county councillors, the KMAT staff and a sixth form member of staff.

"Lots of works have been going on including with the town clerk and Cllr Insley to find funding streams for some of the projects we are looking at."
