Liberal Democrats welcome 'strong vision' of Kenilworth Rugby Club plans

By James Smith 5th Aug 2021

Formal approval of the plans for the new Kenilworth Rugby Club site off Warwick Road have been welcomed by local Liberal Democrats.

The plans for the Rugby Club will see a brand new clubhouse and five new senior and two new junior rugby pitches.

The site, on the southern edge of Kenilworth on the eastern side of Warwick Road towards Leek Wootton, is one of a number of significant developments that will be taking place in the St John's ward in Kenilworth. These developments are all part of a complex jigsaw which will impact residents in the town over the next ten years and beyond.

Speaking at the Warwick District Council Planning Committee meeting at which the plans were approved (February 2), Councillor Andrew Milton (Lib Dem, Ken St John's) said: "Any development of this type needs to be properly thought through and take account of the importance of the environment and the climate change emergency to make a positive contribution to our community.

"The club has a strong vision that will create a top class sporting facility to attract visitors to our town and district. It brings with it the social and wellbeing benefits of sport to the local community across all age ranges.

"I'm pleased also to see the efforts that the club have taken to accommodate and welcome active travel options (like cycling and walking) and has, in my view, taken seriously the need to create a sustainable building and to work with the current biodiversity to ensure a net gain.

"Residents have very valid concerns about the local transport infrastructure outside the site, especially the 50mph speed limit on Warwick Road. We share these concerns and believe that the county council should relook at their decision before the build is completed."
