Liberal Democrats criticise 'lack of regret' in district council's decision not to reopen Kenilworth lido

Liberal Democrat councillors in Kenilworth have criticised the district council's decision not to reopen the Abbey Fields lido this year.

Warwick District Council made the announcement yesterday that the outdoor pool would not open for its 125th anniversary year due to the cost of reopening compared to the expected footfall.

WDC has been put off a final decision on reopening the lido since the end of March when the government announced that outdoor swimming could resume following the national lockdown.

Leader of Kenilworth Town Council's Liberal Democrats group Cllr Kate Dickson said: "To make matters even worse, there is no sense of regret expressed in the district council's statement.

"This is obviously hugely disappointing news on a number of levels. It's disappointing for residents of all ages, especially as the school holidays have just begun.

"It's also very disappointing for visitors to the town and the local businesses who would have benefitted from them also spending time in our many cafes, bars, restaurants and shops when they visited Kenilworth."

With a planning application currently submitted for the demolition of the current Abbey Fields Leisure Centre, it could be that this is the end of outdoor swimming in Kenilworth.
